Summary
Joyce has felt invisible her whole life, and after the guy of her dreams forgets her name she feels more invisible than ever. The book The Fold, written by An Na, is about a teenage Korean girl who is contemplating a life changing decision. Joyce's extremely traditional, controlling, plastic surgery loving aunt comes into town and gives her a gift of a procedure that will make her 'beautiful.' Her whole life, Joyce has only been told that she will never be as pretty as her older sister Helen and in school they make fun of her for her Korean features. Throughout the book, Joyce encounters many people, including her best friend Gina, her parents, her siblings, her school mates and people she would never think of talking to and all who influenced her decision on the procedure. The procedure was called The Fold; it was just a small fold in your eye, that many people, with the exception for Koreans, were born with. Even though it is such a minor procedure, she is still altering her appearance to bring happiness to her aunt, who is practically forcing her to continue with the fold, and to make herself more presentable for others. With all the thoughts rushing through her head, Joyce is unclear of her decision. Read the book to find out what Joyce decides to do in the end.
